RICHMOND, Va. – First it was a hashtag, then a free weekend trolley and now it is free donuts from Sugar Shack – all to entice Richmonders back out of their homes and out into businesses.

The hashtag #rvaopen4biz came in response to local businesses who said that they were suffering 30 – 60 % losses pinpointed to have begun when the UCI Road World Championship races started on Sept. 19.

As more restaurant chimed in, and alliances were formed, merchants organized strategies to get people out of their homes.

Like the free trolley rides Friday, Saturday and Sunday, during the forecasted peak of the UCI races.  Read more, here.

Now Sugar Shack, who offers a freebie challenge daily, is offering a free house donut if you can provide a receipt that you shopped a Richmond City business.

A day before they tweeted about the donut freebie, they tweeted:

“Missing: 450,000 tourists. If found please call all your suffering, local businesses.”

The freebie applies to all three locations: Lombardy, Parham, Midlothian. Be aware, though, of the road closures from noon to around 4 p.m. if you hit up the downtown spot.
