RICHMOND, Va. -- The story of  two Henrico drivers fined over $70,000 for driving in toll lanes without having an E-ZPass has drivers buzzing.

"If you plan to travel toll roads in Virginia, sign up for an E-ZPass," Shannon Marshall said.

However, WTVR CBS 6 has learned that even drivers with the devices can get fined for not having them in the right places.

Here are some tips for not getting fined:

E-ZPass Device Location

Place your EZ Pass under the mirror of your windshield and to the left. Velcro it. That is the best location according to VDOT to ensure it is scanned.

Check Statements

Check statements to make sure your E-ZPass is functioning properly.

Link License Plate

VDOT says Link your license plate to ensure it is scanned. This is not an option for those who share E-ZPasses.

Setup automatic withdrawal

VDOT recommends setting up your E-ZPass so it always replenishes your account when it gets low.

Sign up for text alerts

A new feature allows you to receive text alerts when your balance is low.

Credit Card Expiration

Keep your credit cards up to date so that you are not linking your account with an expired one.
