RICHMOND, Va. — A disturbance in the central Atlantic strengthened to Tropical Storm Erika Monday evening, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm is currently located approximately 875 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles, and is moving west at 20 mph.
Erika will move into a region of increased wind shear late this week, which should hamper any further development over the weekend. There’s still a chance that the storm could briefly become a hurricane before weakening.
