RICHMOND, Va. — Local breweries came home with their hands full this year from a popular statewide craft beer competition.
Eight Richmond breweries won a combined 19 awards at the fourth annual Virginia Craft Brewers Cup held over the weekend at Devils Backbone Brewing in Nelson County. Last year, eight breweries from the area took home 10 medals at the event.
Goochland-based Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery led the medal count among its local peers with four for its Virginia Black Bear, Nuclear Nugget, Supreme Leader, and Heir Apparent beers.
The Answer, a new brewpub on West Broad Street, took home three medals for its Hard in the Paint and Larceny beers, the latter of which won two golds, including best of show.
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, which recently announced plans for a massive new facility in West Creek, won three medals for its Pils, Berliner Weisse, and Raspberry Stout.
Extra Billy’s Smokehouse and Brewery in Midlothian scored three awards for its ForeCzech, Citra Ass Down and Sin Bin beers.
Also toasting to an award-winning weekend was Goochland’s Midnight Brewing and Henrico County-based Strangeways Brewing.
