CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- An outside contractor that provides custodial services for Chesterfield Schools is coming under fire after floor cleaning solution was not properly disposed at several schools.

CBS 6 has confirmed with the school division that employees with SSC Service Solutions inappropriately disposed of floor cleaning solutions at several schools in the county, including Matoaca and Alberta F. Smith Elementary off Bailey Bridge Road.

A viewer sent CBS 6 pictures showing work crews outside of Matoaca Elementary school Wednesday night.

In July, the school division outsourced it's custodial staff by entering into a contractual agreement with SSC which services eight Chesterfield schools. That's projected to save the district $3.6 million.

But school leaders said the company will pick up the cost for the environmental cleanup involved at the impacted schools.

Val Emery, SSC Regional Vice President, sent this statement to CBS 6:

“SSC Service Solutions takes the safety of our community very seriously, and all employees were trained at the beginning of the summer on proper disposal techniques. Improper disposal occurred at multiple school locations, including the facilities SSC Service Solutions is responsible for overseeing. We stand behind our employees; our plan is to retrain our people on proper disposal practices and will pay for any environmental clean-up, finishing our summer clean, safe, and on time.”

The school division has been advised there are no public health concerns at this time.
