Witness ducks for cover during Cary Street police shooting

RICHMOND, Va. -- On the intersection of West Cary and Meadow Streets, police said a chaotic clash between two Richmond Police officers and an armed suspect ended after the suspect was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon.

Ambriz said he was taking tools back to his work truck and he wasn't prepared for the amount of gunfire that erupted after officers ordered the man to stop.

"They started shooting back and forth," Ambriz said. "They were maybe 12 or 15 feet away from each other."

Ambriz said he had a close up view and even had to duck to avoid being hit. He said after the officer was hit, he believes his partner returned fire and hit the suspect.

"Even when he was down the guy continued firing shots," Ambriz said.

Ambriz also said both officers made their way back to the suspect and tried to help him. "Tried to give the guy CPR? Yes, they tried to help him," said Ambriz. "It was crazy man, crazy."

Police sources told CBS 6 the suspect killed in the shooting was a person of interest in a violent crime that happened in this area in recent weeks.

The Richmond Police officer suffered a non-life threatening injury in the shooting.
