NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. -- A teenager died after he collapsed on the basketball court at Quinton Community Park in New Kent Wednesday night. The New Kent Fire Chief said rescue crews were called to the basketball courts at about 7:30 p.m.

Logan Wilson was with his 15-year-old friend when the boy collapsed on the court.

“It was kind of all a blur it still feels unreal to me now,” Wilson said.

Wilson said it happened when he and his friends were taking a break after a game.

“He was sitting here and he fell to the ground and... started having trouble breathing,” he said.

Wilson said he and his friends immediately called 911 and began CPR.

“I'm holding his hand feeling for the pulse and he couldn't respond,” Wilson explained. “We just kept trying to keep him alive.”

The New Kent fire chief said first responders continued CPR as they rushed the victim to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Emergency workers reported they did not see any external injuries on the child.

“I thought it was a dream I didn't think he was actually dead. I thought I was in a nightmare," Jordan Hathaway, another of the boy's friends, said.

Felix Ramirez, who was also playing basketball when the unthinkable happened, said he wants the boy’s family to know how much his friend meant to so many people in New Kent.

“He was a really good, really good guy,” Ramirez said.

The teenager's name has not yet been released, however the New Kent Charles City Chronicle reported he was a rising sophomore at New Kent High School.
