Virginia’s First Lady and NFL star team up for summer meals program

ALEXANDRIA, Va — Virginia’s first lady is on a mission to tackle child hunger and Tuesday she had some help from an NFL star.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith joined Dorothy Mcauliffe at Hollin Meadows Elementary in Alexandria to promote the summer food service program.

The federally funded program makes free meals available to kids age 18 and younger in Richmond when school is out. The program is also available in Chesterfield, Henrico, and Petersburg.

Experts said one of every six children in Virginia suffer from hunger something statistics show gets worse in the summer months as budgets become more strained.

This summer, USDA will serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 years and under the Summer Food service Program
