HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — A kitchen fire burned a family of five from their Mechanicsville home. Wednesday afternoon’s fire along the 4000 block of Rockhill Road was first reported at 1:45 p.m.

“Upon arrival, fire crews found a two story residence with smoke coming from the roof. Fire crews quickly made entry to the home and searched the residence for occupants and made an aggressive attack on the fire,” Hanover Fire-EMS spokesman Battalion Chief Jason Williams said. “It took approximately 20 fire personnel to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes. No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.”

While the exact cause of the fire remained under investigation. the Hanover Fire Marshal’s Office said it appeared the fire started in the kitchen and traveled to the second floor of the home. The American Red Cross is helping the family of five that lost their home.
