RICHMOND, Va. – An investigation has been launched after a historic Confederate statue was defaced overnight.

However, this vandalism did not take place on Monument Avenue but took place in Church Hill.

Someone spray-painted the base of the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument located next to Libby Hill Park at north 29th Street and Libby Terrace.

On one side of the base there is an expletive and the word is unclear. On the other side there are the letters R-G-B-Z and an arrow.

The vandalism at the monument, which is one of the tallest in Richmond, was discovered Friday morning.

The vandalism comes a week after someone spray-painted "Black Lives Matter" on the Jefferson Davis Statue on Monument Avenue.

A few days later, that monument was defaced again, and that vandal was caught. He has already pleaded guilty and apologized.
