RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police are investigating a two-vehicle accident on Jahnke Road at Spruance Road on the city's Southside Wednesday evening.

The head-on collision happened shortly after 6 p.m. and sent both vehicles into the ditch.

Eight people were involved in the wreck. Five children and one adult were transported to an area hospital, according to police. Officials said their injuries did not appear to be any life-threatening.

Police said a car traveling west Wednesday veered into eastbound traffic and hit another car head-on. That westbound car ended up at the corner of Spruance Road.

The stretch of Jahnke Road on the Richmond’s Southside has seen a fair number of terrible accidents in recent weeks.

"People got to realize when you get back on the concrete it whips you across and that's why there’s always a collision," said a man who called himself "Top."

Wednesday night's accident scene was just a few feet from last week's deadly hit-and-run near Jahnke and Newell. People who live in the area said they have had enough.

"They need a four-way stop there," said "Top."

While a four-way stop may not be the engineering cure that city officials have in mind, traffic officials said a raised median is in the works to slow traffic in the busy area. In addition, turn lanes for Newell, Spruance, Irby, Forestview School Drive and Leceister Roads are in the works along with sidewalks for foot traffic.

The Jahnke Road Improvement Project also calls for safety improvements at the CSX rail crossing, a project that will cost millions.

Neighbors said the millions would be well-spent if it means saving lives.

"When you leave your home, you just have to give it to the Lord in your heart and mind, because it's not guaranteed you 'll come back," said Evadne Hibbert, who lives across the street from the accident scene.
