ASHLAND, Va. – Hanover County Public Schools named Dr. Robert Richardson, Jr., as the school division’s newly appointed interim Superintendent of Schools.  The former New Kent County Superintendent of Schools will serve in this role until a permanent selection is made later this year. Dr. Richardson, an Ashland resident and College of William and Mary alum, retired as New Kent County Superintendent in 2014, according to Hanover County Public Schools spokesman Chris Whitley.

“I am honored to have been selected by the Hanover County School Board to lead and serve such an excellent school division,” he said in a statement. “The unwavering commitment and focus of our staff are readily apparent.  The strong support of our parents, volunteers, community, business partners, and county leaders is equally evident.  As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, I am looking forward to working closely with the School Board and staff in maintaining our focus on exceptional student learning and achievement.  This has been and will continue to be the hallmark of our Division.”

Richardson’s 44-year career in education began as a teacher in Roanoke City Schools in 1970. Since then, Dr. Richardson has served in a variety of roles, including:

  • Superintendent of Schools
  • Associate Superintendent for Instruction

  • Director of Student Services
  • Supervisor of Special Education
  • Principal
  • Special Education Coordinator
  • Project Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Education
  • Coordinator of Services to Children
  • School consultant
  • Classroom teacher

Recently, Dr. Richardson served on a Hanover County Schools team selected to develop a proposal for a model summer regional Governor’s School with a focus on Career and Technical Education.  He also served as a consultant to the Hanover County Schools Facilities and Program Evaluation Committee.
