Independence, MO — A grandmother is charged in a chilling murder for hire plot involving her former son-in-law.

Court documents show Teresa Owen, 61, tried to pay someone $700 to kill her former son-in-law because there was an ongoing custody dispute and she believed he was standing in the way of her being able to see her grandchildren.

Court documents say police got involved when the grandmother allegedly tried to hire a hit man. They say Owen told a waitress at an Independence, MO, restaurant to pass along an envelope.

Inside “it contained $100 in U.S. currency and a note that contained the first and last name, address, employer and car description of an individual (the ‘intended victim’).”

Later an undercover police officer said the two met at a library, then drove around and discussed killing Owen’s ex son-in-law, saying she wanted him “gone and never to return.”

The two even allegedly had a code referring to the plot as a “complete tear out or remodel.”

According to court documents, “Owen told the (undercover officer) that the intended victim was a problem for her and that he/she was standing in between her seeing her grandchildren.”

Owen allegedly said she wanted it to look like an accident.

None of Owen’s neighbors or family members wanted to comment on her alleged plot to kill her former son-in-law.
