HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A smoke alarm alerted a West End family of five to a fire inside their home early Thursday morning. Two adults, three children and their dogs escaped the fire unharmed.

When Henrico Fire crews arrived at the home along the 1600 block of Denham Road, between Three Chopt and Pemberton Roads, at around 2:50 a.m., smoke was seen coming from the top of the house, according to Henrico Fire spokesman Capt. Danny Rosenbaum.

"Inside the home fire crews found fire on the second floor of the two-story home," Rosenbaum said. "There was moderate fire damage done to the room where the fire started and smoke damage to the second floor."

The fire was marked under control at about 3:43 a.m.

"Due to the quick extinguishment of the fire the displacement should only be for a short period of time," Rosenbaum added.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
