RICHMOND, Va. — It was primary night in central Virginia for state and local elections and there were some upsets.

In Republican primaries, in the 11th senate district incumbent Steve Martin lost to upstart Amanda Chase 40 to 35 percent.

And in the 12th District Dr. Siobhan Dunnavant beat Bill Janis 39 to 31. Dunnavant had been endorsed by Walter Stosch, who is retiring.

Some were surprised by the final numbers in the Democratic primaries.

In the 74th House District Lamont Bagby defeated Leonidas Young with 81 percent of the vote, to 12 percent. This is the former district for embattled politician Joe Morrissey.

In the 10th Senate District, Chesterfield supervisor Dan Gecker beat Emily Francis and Alex Mcmurtrie with 46 percent of the vote. Gecker will face Republican Glen Sturtevant, a member of the Richmond School Board, in November.
