HOPEWELL, Va. -- A fire in Hopewell presented challenges to firefighters, who rushed to rescue multiple pets.

The homeowner heard a loud pop and saw the flames and then ran through the fire, before getting out of the house.

Firefighters faced challenges trying to rescue the animals and put out the flames.

The clutter inside the home also challenged firefighter as they worked to rescue animals and put out flames.

Hopewell fire officials say they had to call in Prince George and Fort Lee to assist because of the clutter that nearly blocked the front door.

They believe the fire started in the living room.

“We did have hot spots…turning stuff over in the debris. And now, like I said, the hard part is getting the stuff out so that we can find and determine the cause, the origin, of the fire,” said Chief Donny Hunter.

Eight animals were removed from the home; six cats and two dogs. Two cats didn't make it.
