PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police now say they care conducting a homicide investigation after a 23-year-old man was shot Tuesday evening inside a home on Spring Street in the City of Petersburg.

Petersburg Police responded to the 100 block of Spring Street for a person shot inside a home just after 5:30 p.m.

The victim, Jamal Alston of Petersburg, was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Several hours after the shooting , police and detectives were seen going in and out of a house with a red roof. As they worked, innocent eyes were looking on.

"I heard two gunshots: pow, pow!" said a woman who wanted to remain anonymous.

She said she saw a man loaded into an ambulance and another led away in handcuffs, but police haven't confirmed any arrests. "It's right next door to me,” that woman said. She said the drama unfolding next door is just too much.

“Unfortunately this has become a way of life,” said Cassandra Conover, the Petersburg Commonwealth’s Attorney. “We need to do something to turn this around. Our children as well as our adults are living in stressful times and things like this add to the stress."

Witnesses said the man was shot inside. What led up to the shooting that erupted right at dinner time is a question people living here want answered.

"What we have is a suspicious situation where a man has died,” said Conover. “The investigation is ongoing."
