Body discovered in woods near home of missing man

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A body found near the home of missing Colonial Heights man Andrew J. Smith has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Richmond for identification, according to Colonial Heights Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Ruxer. Smith, 23, was last seen at his home along the 2300 block of Wakefield Avenue in Colonial Heights on Friday. The body was found Wednesday evening at about 6:15.

"[Search crews] with the assistance of a rescue dog from VK-9 Search and Rescue out of Virginia Beach, were searching the wooded area near the home of missing person Andrew J. Smith. During that search, the rescue dog located the remains of an unknown person in a wooded area a quarter of a mile from the missing person’s home, in Chesterfield County," Ruxer said.

WTVR CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil reported on the search for Smith on Wednesday evening.
