HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe joined hundreds of parents and students for a Walk-to-School event in Henrico County. McAuliffe walked to class with children from Ridge Elementary School and Tuckahoe Middle School Tuesday morning.
The neighborhood parade is part of Henrico's participation in the Safe Routes to School program, as well as the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth's childhood obesity prevention conference.
"Walking to school is just a wonderful and great thing. We need to focus on how we can get more kids walking to school and taking advantage of the exercise and opportunities to get their blood moving before they settle down for school in the morning," McAuliffe said.
Once students completed their journey, participants walked around the Tuckahoe Middle School track and later participated in a bike rodeo and listened to a performance by the school's jazz band and chorus.
