BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech honored the memory of the 32 students and faculty members on the 8th anniversary of the campus shooting. A moment of silence at 9:43 a.m. Thursday, was followed by a community picnic. The extinguishing of a Ceremonial Candle is scheduled later Thursday evening.

"[The victims of the April 16, 2007 shooting] ranged in age from 18 to 76 and represented a variety of academic areas, faith and ethnic groups," the university posted online. "We hope that you are able to reflect on the tremendous promise each of them embodied for our world with creativity, intelligence, humility, and humanity."

"Today is to remember, to comfort and to reflect on how our campus, our community and our world has been changed by 4/16," Virginia Tech President Timothy D. Sands tweeted.

On Saturday, a 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance will be held to honor the shooting victims.
