DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A bizarre encounter along Interstate 85 left a driver believing he had spotted a police impostor early Tuesday morning.

Melisa Hamlett said her husband was heading home from work when a late 90s or early 2000s silver Grand Prix got behind him just after midnight in the southbound lanes just before the Rt. 460 exit.

Now the family and the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office is hoping to get the word out in case it happens again.

"There was one vehicle behind him and he got over in the right-hand lane and the car came up beside him and started revving the engine," Hamlett said. "My husband slowed down some more to let him go by and then he had gotten a car length in front of him and turned on blue lights."

Sheriff Duck Adams has his deputies looking for the car, which is described as a two-door with a bug deflector on the front.

The car sped off down Rt. 460 taking the Poole Siding-Trinity Church Road exit.

Adams said he wants the public to also be looking for the car in hopes that someone will get a license plate number.

Some living in the area said that a police impersonator is cause for concern.

"It's a little scary cause it's close to home, I have two kids, a 5-month-old and a 12-year-old, so it would be scary thinking someone could possible try to pull me over and not actually being an actual law enforcement officer," said  Ashley Smith.

If you have experienced something similar or see the car you're asked to call the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office at 804-469-4550.
