RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Highland Springs High School graduate Darian Brown said he was so determined to earn his psychology degree from Shaw University, he decided to sleep in his car rather than return home to Central Virginia. Brown, who runs track, said he ended up living in his car after he made some mistakes at school. Brown said he was kicked out of student housing last fall after he fell behind on rent. He said he used his rent money to pay medical bills after getting into a fight.

"I thought about coming home, but then I'm thinking no, I'm not taking any more breaks," Brown said."Education is everything, really and I'm doing everything I can to get that degree."

When the North Carolina television station that first told Brown's story reached out to Shaw University, a university spokeswoman said they were unaware of Brown's situation. Upon learning about Brown's plight, the spokeswoman said they were able to find him temporary housing and offer him work-study options. Brown is set to graduate in May. He said he wanted to go to graduate school and eventually work toward his PhD.
