RICHMOND, Va. –The two sisters arrested in July 2014, after a woman was stabbed on a GRTC bus in downtown Richmond, appeared in court Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The two sisters, Shamia Cox, 20, and Jonae Cox, 21, were originally charged with malicious wounding.

Shamia pled guilty to misdemeanor assault, and was sentenced to 12 months in jail. Jonae pled no contest to malicious wounding, and her sentencing is scheduled for March 15.

The victim, described as a woman in her 20’s, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She was taken to the hospital for observation and treatment.

The stabbing happened after the victim and the two women got into an argument on the bus. Police said the women all knew each other.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and the bus driver and reviewed GRTC surveillance video.

The incident happened near the intersection of Broad and Bowe Streets.

Pastor Larry Miles said he was sitting in Starbucks and could see the two women on the sidewalk yelling at the third woman who was on the GRTC bus. Miles said he witnessed one of the women hiding a knife behind her back.

He said that when the two women made their way back onto the bus he knew things were about to get violent and he raced out to the bus to try and prevent the attack.

Miles said he wasn’t fast enough. When he got onto the bus he says he saw the victim being stabbed.

He said when the two women left the bus he followed them on foot and remained on the telephone line with police giving a description of the women until they were caught by police about six blocks away.
