CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- An investigation into what caused an early-morning fire at a home along the 7400 block of Belmont Road, near Tuskwillow Drive, continued as the sun rose Friday morning. Neighbors said they heard an explosion before the house caught fire at about 2 a.m.
"Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions. Flames quickly spread to the attic and roof of the home. 911 calls were received from several citizens driving by who saw the flames," Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore wrote in an email.
The neighbors said the house had been vacant for some time, however the previous homeowners did keep dogs on the property. It was unclear whether those dogs were inside the home when the fire started.
"The home suffered significant fire and smoke damage throughout," Elmore said.
Chesterfield Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control at about 4:15 a.m. No injuries were reported.
