Gas leak near loft building closes streets, leaves 100+ in the cold

RICHMOND, Va. -- More than 100 people evacuated from the Hopper Loft building in South Richmond due to an overnight gas leak were allowed back into their homes before Tuesday.

"Residents from last night's gas leak let back inside their apartments. Issues were on the 700 blk of Stockton and Everett," the Richmond Department of Public Utilities tweeted. "Thanks to all our patient customers in Manchester who spent part of the night in their cars -- with their pets -- as we cleared gas leak!"

The leak was first reported at about 2:48 a.m. Tuesday.

No injuries were reported, however some roads remained closed as emergency and utility crews work in the area.
