NORFOLK, Va. -- The Monacan High School Chiefs lost their state semifinal playoffs game in heart-breaking fashion Friday night in Norfolk.

"We've covered a lot of playoff games over the years during the course of Final Score Friday, but probably no finish in a playoff game will top the one I saw tonight," CBS 6 sports reporter Sean Robertson said about the game.

With five seconds left to play and down by two points, Lake Taylor High School lined up for a game-winning field goal. The Monacan Chiefs blocked the kick and the Monacan players started to celebrate believing they had won the game 14-12.

However, the blocked kick did not cross the line of scrimmage. That meant the ball remained "live" and the game was not over.

As Monacan celebrated, a player for Lake Taylor scooped by the ball and scored the game-winning touchdown. Lake Taylor won the game 19-14.

Video of the bizarre ending was posted on WTVR.com Friday night and quickly picked up by national sports websites.

"We have nothing to be ashamed of," Monacan football coach Jim Henderson said following the loss. "Nobody put us in a position to be in the state semi finals, to win a playoff game. We've exceeded everybody's expectations."

Congratulations on a great season Chiefs! Go get'em next year.
