Bullet grazes Virginia State Trooper during Virginia Beach pursuit

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia State Trooper suffered a minor injury after he was grazed by a bullet during a pursuit Friday in Virginia Beach. The pursuit began at about 10 a.m. when a Chevrolet Blazer sped by the trooper, who was stopped along the side of the road.

“The pursuit ended when the Blazer came to a dead end. The trooper stopped and before he could exit his vehicle, the subjects in the Blazer began shooting at the State Police patrol car and then fled on foot,” a Virginia State Police spokesperson said in a statement. “The trooper suffered a minor injury from being grazed by a bullet. He was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment.”

Police have taken one of three suspects into custody. The search continues for the remaining two subjects, police said. Police have not released descriptions of the suspects.

A suspects were tied to a bank robbery in the Strawbridge area of Virginia Beach. Wells Fargo in the 2100 block of General Booth Blvd. was robbed this morning, according to WTKR.com.

“At 9:59 a.m., Virginia State Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a violator in the City of Virginia Beach. The vehicle refused to stop and fled from the trooper. A pursuit was initiated,” said VSP in an issued statement.

“With the assistance of the Virginia Beach Police Department, a male subject was apprehended at 10:19 a.m. in the London Bridge area of Virginia Beach. At this time, State Police and Virginia Beach PD are still searching for any additional suspects related to the incident,” police said.

Strawbridge Elementary School, located nearby, was put on lockdown, officials said.

A statement was issued by the school:

“Kindergarten parents, we need to advise you that afternoon kindergarten will be canceled today as a precautionary measure due to an incident nearby that is requiring a significant police presence. In addition, we will not be releasing morning kindergarten students until the situation is resolved. However, parents can pick up their child, provided you bring identification. Again, let me reassure you our students are safe and these measures are precautionary in nature.”

Gunshots were heard by people inside of the school, that’s when school officials put the school on lockdown and notified police.

A large portion of the Strawbridge area is blocked off.
