Clover Hill student Tasered in cafeteria charged with gang crimes

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Four Clover Hill High School students were charged with a variety of crimes following a morning fight in the school cafeteria. One of the students, a 17-year-old male, was Tasered by the school resource officer who was attempting to break-up the fight, Chesterfield Police

"The fight involved two groups that had been involved in a dispute on social media," Chesterfield Police spokesman Liz Caroon wrote in an email. "Four students involved in the fight, two 17-year-old males, one 16-year-old male and one 15-year-old female, were taken into custody. Two of the suspects were found to be in possession of what appeared to be marijuana, and one was also in possession of alcohol."

Police charged the 17-year-old student who was Tasered with:

  • Assault
  • Prohibited criminal street gang participation
  • Gang activity in a gang-free school zone
  • Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute

A second 17-year-old student was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Prohibited criminal street gang participation
  • Gang activity in a gang-free school zone
  • Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of alcohol

The 16-year-old student was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Prohibited criminal street gang participation
  • Gang activity in a gang-free school zone

The 15-year-old female student was charged with:

  • Assault

"No one involved in the incident was transported by EMS and no one sustained significant injuries," Caroon said. "All four are currently being held at the Chesterfield County Juvenile Detention Home. Police continue their investigation into this incident. Additional charges are possible."

The fight started at about 7:15 a.m., police said.

"The principal of Clover Hill called and emailed parents this morning at 8:06 a.m. to make them aware of an incident (altercation between students) that occurred and resulted in students arriving in their first period classes early and several police officers arriving on campus to ensure the safety of all students," Chesterfield Public Schools spokesman Shawn Smith wrote in an email. "No weapons were involved and there was no lockdown. School operations returned to normal."
