HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Fetal remains were found Monday afternoon at the Henrico Waste Water Treatment Facility.

The fetal remains were found at the wastewater plant on Jennie Scher Road, in eastern Henrico. The remains indicate that the fetus was pre-term -- defined as such when it is less than 37 weeks gestational age -- with the umbilical cord still attached, according to sources.

The remains were found by employees processing solid waste.

The fetal remains have been taken to the Medical Examiner for evaluation,  according to Henrico Police spokesman Lieutenant Chris Eley.

At this time there are no further details to release until an autopsy is completed and this investigation is looked into further, Lt. Eley said.

"The Medical Examiner, among other things, will take a look at if the fetus was viable," CBS 6 legal analyst Todd Stone said. "And then they will pass that information along to investigators who will determine if there was any negligence in the fetus' death."

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
