RICHMOND, Va. -- Court documents obtained from Richmond Circuit Court reveal that the man charged with kidnapping a young nurse in Philadelphia and wanted for abducting a teenage girl in Richmond once pursued mental health counseling.

Delvin Barnes was charged with two counts of robbery and one count of use of a firearm after allegedly using a firearm to steal jewelry from a woman in Richmond in August of 2001, according to court documents.

Barnes was found guilty on the robbery counts and received a 40 year sentence, but the majority of his sentence was suspended.

However, in August of 2002, Barnes was charged with conspiring to commit a felony and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to court records, Barnes picked up two juveniles, one of them just 13, and drove them to the Forrest Hill WalMart where he instructed them to go inside and steal DVDs while he waited in the car.

Court records show Barnes was dating the 13-year-old’s sister at the time.

Barnes violated the conditions of his probation for the 2001 robbery, and had to return to court.

A probation termination report from March of 2004 shows Barnes was “pursuing mental health counseling to deal with issues that occurred in the family home while he was growing up.”

The report also shows Barnes was working for his father at the time for Barnes Construction, and he would sometimes use the name Delain Barnes.

Court records show Barnes once lived in Church Hill and near the Kroger by VCU.
