HOPEWELL, Va. -- The wife of the man shot and killed by Hopewell Police Monday was later found dead in the motel room the couple shared, according to Virginia State Police.

Carol E. Lee, 53, was found in a room at the Value Inn on Jennick Drive, off of Interstate 95, in Colonial Heights Monday. Before her body was found, police shot and killed her husband, 54-year-old Gary E. Lee, when he "began making threatening gestures towards the officers," police said.

Before the shooting, officers spotted Lee driving along the railroad tracks on Western Street in Hopewell. Lee stopped for officers, but refused to get out of the car, state police said.

"After more than an hour of attempted negotiations with the man, he began making threatening gestures towards the officers. The man was shot and died at the scene,” Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Vick said. "Upon completion of the state police investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney for final review and adjudication."

Three Hopewell Police officers involved in the fatal shooting were put on paid leave pending the outcome of the Virginia State Police investigation.

This is a developing story.
