An earthquake registering a preliminary 6.2 magnitude was centered 81 miles northwest of Anchorage, Alaska, Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“It was kind of a long one,” Anchorage Police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro told CNN. At this point we have no major reports of damage or injuries.”
The USGS detected the earthquake at 9:51 a.m. local time with an epicenter in a remote area of southern Alaska, according to the initial report.
“Wow. Big quake. At least it felt big on the 6th floor of the #Anchorage courthouse,” Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reporter Casey Grove tweeted.
Grove then tweeted “and now I’m told they’re evacuating the courthouse.”
Light shaking was felt in the Anchorage area, according to initial report. No tsunami warnings, watches or advisories from this earthquake have been issued because of its inland location.
