12-pound cannonball with intact fuse discovered near Battlefield Park Road

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon after a cannonball with an intact fuse was discovered in Henrico County.

The relic was found Monday afternoon along a trail in the 8000 block of Battlefield Park Road at Fort Gilmer in Richmond's National Battlefield Park.

The National Park Service said an employee was working on a trail when they stumbled upon what they believed to be a partially exposed cannonball.

National Park Service staffers, along with a historian, confirmed the items was a cannonball said it was six-inches in diameter and weighed 12 pounds. Additionally, they discovered that the weapon had an intact partial fuse at the bottom of the ball.

As a result, the Henrico Bomb Squad and Henrico Fire Department responded. They removed the cannonball, took it to a range and detonated the weapon.

One home was evacuated and another residence was unoccupied when the incident occured.
