HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A group of Godwin High School students raised more than $1,200 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Saturday. The students held an awareness and fundraising walk in Deep Run Park.

Suicide Walk

The students wore red to honor the memory of classmate Christopher Sims. Red was Sims’ favorite color, his mother Jany Sims said.

Sims died of suicide seven months ago, his mother said.

In the days following Sims’ death, his friends at Godwin took it upon themselves to write encouraging comments on Post-it notes and placed those notes on lockers, hallways and classrooms around the school.

“Chris was known by many as one to help others find the bright side in difficult times and an encourager to peers struggling with personal challenges,” Godwin principal Elizabeth K. Armbruster wrote in an email following Sims’ death.
