HAMPTON, Va. — Police are working to determine how a person whose body was found in a burned truck, parked outside the Sears on West Mercury Boulevard in Hampton, died.

“The preliminary investigation has revealed that just after 4 a.m. on September 9, 2014 the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division responded to a vehicle fire,” a Hampton Police spokesman said in a written statement. “The fire was extinguished; however the deceased was not located at that time.”

About six hours later a passerby found the body inside the cab of the burned 2006 Dodge Dakota and called police.

“The identity, gender, age and cause of death are unknown at this time and will be determined after autopsy is completed by the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office,” Hampton Police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hampton Police at 757-727-6111 or Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
