The first openly gay man to be drafted into the NFL has joined the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad — taking the next step in his quest to make a team’s regular roster.

The Cowboys signed defensive lineman Michael Sam to the 10-man practice squad, the team said Wednesday. The squad supplements the team’s regular 53-man roster for practices only.

Sam, an All-American defensive end who played for the University of Missouri, made history when he was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh and final round of the NFL draft last May. But the Rams waived him Saturday after four preseason games.
