NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. — The body of a boater was discovered Tuesday morning along the shore of the Pamunkey River.

William G. Hodges, of Providence Forge, was last seen jumping into the river Sunday afternoon. His body was located about 40 yards from where he was last seen, New Kent Sheriff’s Deputy Joe McLaughlin wrote in an email.

New Kent Fire-Rescue teams found Hodges’ body. It was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond where cause of death will be determined.

Witnesses said they saw Hodges trying to get his boat back to shore several times Sunday after the craft stalled.  He eventually dove into the water around 1 p.m., to presumably swim to shore.  He never resurfaced.
