Weekend Events: New shoes for students, Chesterfield County Fair, Opera in the Park

Virginia Opera, The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia,  2nd annual Opera in the Park, Saturday, August 30th at Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, 6000 South Boulevard in Byrd Park. Dogwood Dell will  open at 6pm and the concert will start at 7:30pm  This year's Opera in the park is the first event of the 40th Anniversary of Virginia Opera. Also this year at Opera in the Park, Virginia Opera will be hosting a costume contest for people dressed as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett, prizes include VIP ticket and ding packages based on popular vote of the audience. Opera in the Park is free and open to the public, there's also free parking at Dogwood Dell. The Partnership of Churches is having its 9th annual "New Shoes for back to School" Ministry on Monday, Labor Day, September 1st, from 8am to 4pm at Third St. Bethel AME in 2005, 712 pairs of shoes were given out but the Shoe Ministry soon outgrew the location and relocated to Second Baptist Church of South Richmond, 3300 Broad Rock Boulevard.  To date the New Shoes Ministry has given out over 65,00 pairs of new shoes to students, a partnership between churches, business and the community. Donations from Marshalls, Saxon Shoes, Walmart, Rugged Warehouse, Pepsi Cola, The Shoe Rack, Panera Bread, Bizport Printing, Target, Cobra I, SC and Steinmart and Saxon Shoes will work alongside the volunteers on the day of the shoe give-away. 101st Chesterfield County Fair at Chesterfield County Fairgrounds across from L.C. Bird High School, through Saturday  August 30. Monday - Friday 4pm - 11pm, Saturday, 11am - 11pm, Sunday 1pm - 11pm, tickets $8 - adults, $5 - seniors, $5 - child ages 4 -11, free for ages 3 and under, admission to all grandstand activities/fireworks/rodeo included. Aretha Francklin's concert at Altria CANCELLED: Due to scheduling conflicts, Aretha Franklin’s show scheduled for the Altria Theater on Monday, November 17th has been cancelled.
Ms. Franklin, National Shows 2 and Altria Theater apologize to ticket buyers for any inconvenience. Tickets purchased with a credit card will be refunded automatically.
