WASHINGTON — The National Football League suspended Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather for two games following the helmet-to-helmet hit he put on Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith Saturday night, according to a report on ESPN.com. Meriweather has been fined and suspended in previous seasons for illegal hits.

“Meriweather delivered a forceful blow to the head and neck area of a defenseless receiver with no attempt to wrap up or make a conventional tackle of this player,” NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent said in a statement.

“I felt like I did everything right,” Meriweather said after the game.

Washington Redskins star linebacker Brian Orakpo took to social media to express his disappointment with the NFL’s decision.

“This some BS!!!!!! Meriweather 2 games suspension really smh,” Orakpo tweeted.

Meriweather can appeal his suspension.

The Washington Redskins kickoff the 2014 season Sunday, September 7 versus the Houston Texans. The Redskins take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.
