SELMA, Ala. – An Alabama elementary school teacher is on leave after parents complained about one of her classroom assignments.

According to the New York Daily News, she had her sixth-grade students recreate the racially charged shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

Parents said white students played the city’s police, and African-American students portrayed Michael Brown.

They say the children were told to research everything they could about the shooting online, then re-enact it using a paper gun and bullets.

“They are teaching these children to hate one another when we’re supposed to be teaching them to love one another,” mother Jessica Baughn posted on the Sound Off Selma website.

The school said an internal investigation is underway and that they will not comment until it is complete.
