HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police used an airplane and officers on the ground to search the Wyndham neighborhood in far western Henrico after a man said he was stabbed by a stranger wearing all black.

The police response prompted neighbors to call and reach out to CBS 6 via social media and ask what was happening along Park Forest Court at about 9:45 Wednesday night.

As the stabbing victim was taken to the hospital, he told police the original story he told officers was made up and he had actually stabbed himself.

The man underwent surgery and his condition is currently unknown, as are the intentions behind the self-inflicted stabbing.

The plane was initially deployed to help in the investigation, police said.
