RICHMOND, Va. — As part of the ongoing Canal Walk project, which will help improve the pedestrian experience along the Haxall Canal, a bridge will be installed Friday morning, August 8.

The bridge will be installed in front of the Casa del Barco Restaurant on south 12th Street, and will link the north and south sides of the canal. Pedestrians can also follows the pathway of the historic Kanawha and Haxall canals from Great Shiplock Park up to Tredegar Ironworks.

Beginning Thursday, a 550 ton crane will be brought to the site and assembled. The prefabricated pedestrian bridge will be 87 feet long by 10 feet wide. It arrives early Friday and over the course of the day will be set in place.

The city plans to open the bridge to pedestrians by the following Friday, according to Sharon North.

The intersection of East Byrd Street and South 12th Street, to the spillway overlook parking lot will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to allow for installation.

This bridge is separate of a proposed BridgePark, or the Dam Walk project which hopes to extend the bridge already in place over the James to get people easily to the south bank. You can learn more about BridgePark, intended as an event space, by clicking the video below.
