RICHMOND, Va. — Top Chef contestant and Maryland-restaurateur Bryan Voltaggio plans to open a restaurant at The Shops at Willow Lawn in 2015. The restaurant, called Family Meal, will be his third Family Meal location and eighth restaurant overall in Maryland, Washington and Virginia.

“My family frequently visits Family Meal in Frederick, and I wanted to bring that same place to the Richmond community,” Voltaggio said in a press released announcing the new restaurant. “The full-service diner concept lends itself to local families, working professionals, visitors alike, and we’re looking forward to offering homemade, high-quality, food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at The Shops at Willow Lawn.”

Voltaggio’s entrance into Richmond has a little to do with his business partner Hilda Staples. Her husband was born and raised in Richmond.

“Although a big city, Richmond still has that small town feel that we love about Frederick, our hometown,” Staples said. “Having visited for most holiday family gatherings, I knew Richmond would be a great location for our more casual restaurant concept.”

Family Meal will offer “modern twists on time-honored American classics.” In addition to Voltaggio’s sophisticated meals, the restaurant will offer a children’s menu.

Voltaggio is not the first reality-show chef to open up shop in the Richmond area.

Food Network Star contestant Malcolm Mitchell recently announced plans to open Mint Gastropub in Petersburg.  Top Chef contestant Mike Isabella is opening Graffiato on West Broad Street in downtown Richmond.
