ASHLAND, Va. – An off-duty Henrico firefighter ran into a burning home in an attempt to rescue an 80-year-old woman Tuesday morning in Ashland. He was able to pull the fire victim from the home. She was taken to VCU Medical Center where she later passed away.

Fire crews were called to the 12000 block of Cheroy Road, off Ashcake Road near Interstate 95, about 5:45 a.m.

Crews arrived to find flames shooting from the home. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

“The Hanover Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled the fire accidental with a probable electrical cause,” Hanover Fire Battalion Chief Jason Williams wrote in an email. “It does not appear to be suspicious in nature.”

The home is located in a rural part of Central Virginia, so three tanker trucks were brought in to provide water to fight the fire.  The tanker trucks hold about 3,000 gallons of water each.
