PRINCE GEORGE, Va. - An SUV crashed and overturned near the intersection of S. Crater Road and Prince George Drive, with five children and a driver inside.
The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.Two children and the driver were thrown from the SUV, witnesses said.
Family members told us Wednesday two children were flown to VCU Medical Center after an accident in Prince George County Wednesday.
Their rescue came after a Navy veteran rounded a curve and saw a total of five children outside their vehicle on South Crater Road.
They were in stable condition by evening Wednesday.
"I saw five kids lying in the road, crawling around," said Kenneth Walls. "The woman looked liked she had passed, and then all of a sudden she started flopping like a fish. They were lucky. Their parents oughta’ go to church tonight."
Walls had been driving down South Crater on his way to make an air-conditioning delivery. That’s when he saw the SUV flipped over on its roof.
Witnesses say the driver was ejected along with two children. "I know they weren't buckled up: there was only one car seat in the car," said Walls.
Police say that's part of an ongoing investigation.
According to Walls, the children looked like they ranged in age from three to ten years old.
"I'm shaking, man,” said Walls. What really struck a nerve with this salty veteran was one of the victims. "The girl’s name was Savannah, same as my daughter," he said.
Walls said he didn’t waste time trying to help. "I grabbed tissue from my truck and wrapped their heads because they were bleeding," Walls said.
Police on scene said it appeared none of the children were secured by a seat belt or child safety seat.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police say all of the injuries were non-life-threatening.
