Virginia State Police said a single-engine 1968 Cessna 150 crashed just before 5 p.m. at Lockley’s Creek Road near Greys Point in Topping, which is not far from Hummel Field-W75 airport.

Sergeant M. Anaya with Virginia State Police said that the male pilot was killed in the crash.

Anaya identified the pilot as 58-year-old Stephen L. Myers, of Somerset Street in Christiansburg. State Police and the FAA continue investigating the crash.

The female passenger, who was air-lifted from the scene, later died from injuries sustained from the  crash. State police identified her as 48-year-old Misty Dawn McIntyre of Newport in Giles County.

Gregory Carter said he knew something was wrong when he heard a rattling noise and then saw the aircraft jerk and circle in the sky around 4:30. Moments later, the pilot was dead and a female passenger was critically injured after she was partially ejected from the aircraft.

"We had some citizens come forward and untangle her from some seat belt material," Mark Nugent Middlesex County Emergency Services said.

Eyewitnesses said it could have been much worse since the aircraft went down in a field near Eckhard’s Restaurant, which was full of customers. Plus, there was an airport full of parked planes across the street and a home across this field from where the plane crashed.

"He had been at the airport earlier and he was leaving the airport," Nugent said.

The pilot was taking off from nearby Hummel field, but said said no more information would be given until family was notified.

The FAA already on the scene collecting evidence. State troopers are also investigating the crash.
