CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. - Meadowdale Boulevard reopened Friday morning after water overflowing from Crystal Lake created a trench near the Crystal Lakes Townhomes.

According to Chesterfield Police the recently formed trench was 15-20 feet long, three to four feet wide and four to six feet deep. Officials said the trench was actively draining and stable by Friday morning.

"Being that this has happened it got me definitely considering relocating for the betterment of my family," Crystal Lakes resident Martel Banks said.

Earlier there was concern that rising water and eroding land could force police to evacuate the more than 70 people from several apartments.

The three apartment buildings affected are downhill from the overflowing lake. According to police, recent rainfall is to blame for the lake overflowing.

"It must have been a lot of rain out here last night," another resident said. "The lake is usually a real nice place to hang out around here."

"It was a concern that I didn't know about," Banks said. "I didn't think it would come to this point."

Environmental engineers were scheduled to go to the lake on Friday to assess the situation. The lake is approximately 12 acres and contains 24.6 million gallons of water.
