Weekend Events: Bacon Festival, Strawberry Faire, Music in the Park & more!

Richmond's Bacon Festival is back Sunday, June 8, from 11am - 5pm at the 17th Street Farmer's Market, Shockoe Bottom, more than 30 Richmond restaurants and food trucks will serve up their creations from deep-fried bacon & Bacon Bloody Mary from River City Diner to bacon & shrimp.  All the bacon you can handle for just $4.00 a plate. Virginia craft beer from Devils DevilsBackbone BrewingCompany will also be available for $6.00 each, Virginia cider, wine, expanded craft market, live local music and a children's area and two entrances along 17th Street, one at Main Street and one at Grace Street, there's even more parking this year. Family friendly activities and entertainment and lots of Strawberries to eat and purchase, the 33rd annual Ashland Strawberry Faire in Historic Ashland is Saturday, June 7th from 10am to 5pm on the campus of Randolph-Macon College, Henry Street.  It's a free event with arts and crafts vendors, strawberry booths, plants and antiques and local businesses from Ashland and Hanover, two stages with entertainment  throughout the day and the ever popular Strawberry contests & pageants, face painting and per adoption and lots of strawberries and strawberries dishes. The Faire is a community event showcasing everything Ashland and Hanover have to offer as well as a fundraiser for non-profit groups and churches. The event is free with parking and shuttle buses from Henry Clay & John Gandy Elementary Schools, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Hanover Social Services and street parking.  The Summer Games is the largest State-Level competition offered by Special Olympics Virginia.  Volunteers are needed to cheer the more than 1500 Athletes competing Saturday, June 7th at The University of Richmond.  Sign up to cheer the athletes at http://www.volunteer2cheer.com. The festivities start Friday, June 6th at 10:30am with the Law Enforcement Torch Run Capitol Leg Ceremony at the State Capitol, Officers will complete the run carrying the Flame of Hope into the Opening Ceremony at the Robins Center.  Competitions start early Saturday at 8:30am at UR and various venues that include the Glen Allen Softball Complex, Bowl America Short Pump, J.R. Tucker High School and the Collegiate Aquatics Center and athletes will compete in track & field, softball, swimming, bowling, powerlifting, wheelchair athletics and tennis. Carytown Craft Beer Festival has  a new home, The Diamond, 3001 North Boulevard, Saturday, June 7 from 12 pm to 6pm. 40 Craft Brews and food pairings from Carytown Restaurants. The Boxer Brief Battle 5K, Hitting Cancer below the belt, Inc. Sponsored by Medarva, Saturday,  race site 7am 0 8:30am at the Boathouse Rocketts Landing, the Boxer Brief Battle 5K Run raises awareness about colon cancer prevention while raising funds for colon cancer research, preventing screening and advocacy. FUTURE Events: Virginia Pork Festival, one of the largest food festivals on the East Coast is Wednesday, June 11, 4pm - 8pm at the Greensville Ruritan Club in Emporia. Over 30 pork dishes served,  four stages featuring The Konnection, The Feature Attraction Band and The Rhondels and Mark Roberts Band. 5th Annual Richmond Jazz Festival, August 7 - 10at Maymont with openers at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.
