RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond used to be a two newspaper town. The Richmond Times-Dispatch, in the morning, and the Richmond News Leader, in the afternoon, were the daily papers that kept Richmonders informed.

In 1992, the Richmond News Leader folded. Some News Leader employees went to work for the Times-Dispatch.

“I believe The Richmond News Leader and The Richmond Times-Dispatch have been good partners for their readers for many years,” publisher J. Stewart Bryan III wrote in a May 1992 editorial. “Starting tomorrow, they will continue that legacy — but in a different form. The News Leader will exist no longer as a separate, afternoon newspaper, but its spirited abilities and talents will survive as integral parts of the new Times-Dispatch.”

“The Times-Disaptch will be printed and distributed from a new and modern plant at the intersection of Interstate 295 and U.S. 301,” Bryan continued. “The presses are the newest and best available in the world today. Reproduction will be greatly improved. The paper will use more color, new typefaces and a new design. Standing features will have fixed positions.”
