HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- The case against a Hanover man accused of a murder on Christmas Eve has been dismissed after the suspect died.

Hanover County Commonwealth's Attorney Shari Skipper said Keith Wood died awaiting trial.

CBS 6 News was told the 53-year-old died several days after having surgery for a heart issue.

Deputies said Wood killed 49-year-old George Teal while he was delivering presents to Wood's home on Christmas Eve.

“We wrapped up a gift and put some toiletries and a blanket together,” Teal’s stepmother told CBS 6 News in December.

She said her stepson suffered blunt force trauma to his head, had collapsed lungs and broken ribs.

Wood told deputies Teal was spotting him while he was bench-pressing and that the man's death was the result of an accident.

The stepmother of a man found murdered in a Mechanicsville man’s mobile home Christmas morning said the victim was delivering a Christmas gift.
